A Look Back: The History of International Women's Day

The roots of International Women's Day are firmly planted in the labor movements of the early 20th century in North America and Europe. Driven by a desire for better working conditions and the right to vote, women began to organize and raise their voices.

  • Early Seeds (1909): The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America. This was in remembrance of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against harsh working conditions.

  • Internationalization (1910): The concept of an International Women's Day arose at the International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. Clara Zetkin, leader of the Women's Office for the German Social Democratic Party, proposed the idea. While no specific date was set then, the idea was unanimously approved by over 100 women from 17 countries.

  • First Celebrations (1911): International Women's Day was first celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Over a million women and men participated in rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.

  • March 8th Becomes the Date (1913): As part of the peace movement leading up to World War I, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. Following discussions, it was agreed to transfer International Women's Day to March 8th and this day has been the global date ever since.

  • UN Recognition (1975): The United Nations officially recognized International Women's Day in 1975, during International Women's Year. In December 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions.

These rights span across all aspects of life, including legal rights, reproductive rights, freedom from violence, and access to education and healthcare.
