Social Welfare: Eraviperoor Gram Panchayat
Introduction
The Pathanamthitta district of Kerala's Eraviperoor Gram Panchayat has undertaken a number of projects for the panchayat's overall development. The domains of e-Governance, Education, Environmental Protection, Water Supply, Waste Management, Institution Building, and Improving Service Delivery of Government Schemes have all seen interventions.
E-government-related initiatives
- The E-Government sector has made marriage, birth, and death certificates available online so that locals can obtain them with little effort.
- For the benefit of the villagers, voice and text messages are used to distribute notices and information about many vital concerns.
- The board members' wages and honoraria are all paid through banks.
- To quickly locate the records and documents, a record room has been put up.
- Ten of the software programs created by the Information Kerala Mission have been installed and are currently being used to support e-Government.
- Wi-fi internet networking technology has been used to connect the Gram Panchayat office building.
- The Panchayat Office has implemented the Total Quality Management System and received ISO 9001-2008 Certification, making it one of the few such panchayats in the nation.
Education-related initiatives
- A village knowledge center with a reference library and a coaching facility for civil service and other competitive tests has been constructed.
- For the purpose of instilling cultural values in students, Sanskrit, yoga, and art and culture classes are organized. In order to preserve traditional knowledge, a directory of the village's history, culture, and indigenous knowledge has also been created.
Environment-related initiatives
- An environmental gram sabha was organized to raise awareness of waste management and other environmental issues in order to preserve the ecosystem.
- To provide a healthier environment in the future, 20,000 shade tree saplings were delivered.
- For better waste management, a WATSAN park, a contemporary fish market, and a biogas plant were built. Additionally, vermi pipe-ring compost units were supplied.
- The ladies of the village gathered plastic debris, which was used to build a road covered in plastic tar, making the community a leader in waste management.
- A government property that was being used as a landfill has been transformed into a park for kids.
Initiatives involving Water
- By effectively utilizing the Scheduled Caste development budget, a number of projects have been carried out primarily in the Scheduled Caste colonies to enhance the situation of the drinking water supply. In 50 homes in the community, the drinking water supply has improved as a result of this.
- To meet the requirements of the locals and to raise the level of the groundwater, a dry river was revitalized using MGNREGA monies.
- A number of steps have been launched to encourage agricultural operations, including planting on fallow land, distributing banana seedlings, providing subsidies for seedlings and fertilizer, building poly homes, etc
Initiatives for the Empowerment of Women
- Eight centers for treating and preventing diseases have begun offering yoga classes.
- Girls between the ages of 10 and 15 are targeted for karate programs that teach self-defense techniques and boost self-confidence.
- 173 out of the 182 petitions filed since 2010 have been satisfactorily resolved, and special committees have been established to address the problems of women.
Awards
The panchayat has won numerous major accolades, including the 2013–2014 State Best Bio-Diversity Management Committee Award, the 2013–2014 Arogya Puraskaram, and the 2013–2014 Best Panchayat for Pain and Paliative Scheme Implementation Award. The panchayat was chosen as the finest panchayat by the International Centre for Local Democracy, which is situated in Sweden. The study team from the center, which includes representatives from eleven other countries, visited the panchayat. It was chosen as a Model High Tech Green Village and as a result, received an additional Rs 3 crore in State government help in the fiscal year 2013–14. The district level model project was chosen to be the plastic waste management program conducted in the panchayat.
Numerous actions performed in the village assured a better future for future generations while also significantly advancing the panchayat.
